Why are shoulder pads mandatory?

Shoulder pads are a vital piece of equipment that can protect ringette players from serious injuries. According to a recent study by the University of Calgary, shoulder pads can reduce the risk of shoulder fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries by up to 80%. These injuries can have long-term consequences for the health and well-being of young athletes, as well as affect their participation and enjoyment of the sport. Based on this evidence, all four Zone 3 associations, voted to mandate shoulder pads at all levels of youth ringette (AS to U19) at the end of the 2023-2024 season. Similarly, Ringette Calgary voted this policy into effect in June 2024, with the full support of its member associations. This decision is aligned with the science on injury prevention and mitigation, and with our goal of keeping our athletes safe.

What are the requirements for shoulder pads?

Shoulder pads must be designed specifically for ringette or hockey, and must cover the entire shoulder area, including the collarbone, sternum, and shoulder blades. They must also have adequate padding and fit properly. Padded t-shirts are not an acceptable alternative to protective shoulder pads, as they do not provide sufficient coverage or cushioning. Players who do not wear shoulder pads will not be allowed to participate in any ringette activities, including practices, games, tournaments, and camps. Coaches and officials will be responsible for enforcing this rule.
